Envelopes
Earmark part of an account for groceries, utilities, or a trip — spending in matching categories draws it down automatically.
An envelope is a named slice of a checking or savings account — “Groceries” inside Checking, “Vacation” inside Savings. It earmarks money for a purpose without moving it anywhere: the account balance stays the same, and Wuxby tracks how much of it is spoken for.
How the balance works
- Funding adds — one-time moves, recurring funding rules, paycheck splits, and transfers in.
- Spending subtracts automatically — give the envelope categories (like Groceries) and expenses on its account in those categories draw it down. Recategorize a transaction and the envelope updates instantly.
- Leftovers roll over — an envelope keeps its balance month to month, and shows red if you overspend it.
Funding an envelope
- One-time: move money in or out with the Fund button — a virtual move inside the account.
- Recurring rule: “$600 on the 1st of each month” from the account’s unallocated pool.
- Paycheck split: on the Recurring page, split income directly into an envelope (“$600 of each paycheck to Groceries”).
- Transfer in: a recurring transfer from another account can land in a specific envelope.
Envelopes and goals
Link a goal to an envelope and its progress tracks just that slice — so a “Vacation” goal doesn’t claim your whole savings account, and several goals can share one account without double-counting.
Each account shows its unallocated remainder — what’s left after every envelope’s share. If envelopes claim more than the balance, Wuxby flags the account as overallocated.
